Disney Infinity Starter Pack Review

Disney Infinity Starter PackOur rating: 4 stars

Infinity is an interactive Disney video game that gets kids to use their imagination by encouraging them to create their own story lines for characters from three popular Disney movies. Children will use actual physical toy figures of well known characters to play the game.

The figures of Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), Sulley (Monsters University) and Mister Incredible (The Incredibles) come with the starter pack and more characters from those movies are available to purchase separately. Other Disney movies are supported too. So let’s take a close look at the Disney Infinity starter pack and see what makes it appeal.

Review of the Disney Infinity Starter Pack

Disney Infinity Starter PackThe Disney Infinity game is a great idea and probably unique. It crosses the boundaries by combining action figures with a video game. Kids can load up their Infinity base with between one and three Disney Infinity figures and then see them on their console screen, where they can set off into the video game. When a character is placed on the Infinity playing surface, he or she appears handheld video game player or on your TV screen via your games console.

As for most video games, you’ll need a console to play this on. It’s available for most of last year’s popular gaming systems including Wii, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS, but at the time of writing it’s not yet available for PS4 or Xbox One.

You get three Disney Infinity figures in this starter pack, from three different popular Disney movies, and each movie has a play set that you can unlock on the base piece. The characters/movies are Mr Incredible/The Incredibles, Jack Sparrow/Pirates of the Caribbean and Sulley/Monsters University. You also get codes to unlock more content online.

There are two modes. When you set a figure on the base (or more than one – it will take up to three figures at one time) you can access the Play Set mode where the characters will set off on predefined missions for you to accomplish. If you don’t have a character on the base you can get into Toy Box mode where the characters roam more freely so your child can devise adventures for them from his or her imagination.

Two children can play together or a child alone can access online games and play with other kids remotely (there’s a charge for this). In some ways it’s reminiscent of the Activision Skylanders interactive game and will appeal to the same age group, but the Disney technology goes even further.

The Disney Infinity power discs enhance the characters’ abilities, turning them into superheroes. You get one power disc with the starter pack and more are available for separate purchase. You can also buy more characters too, and get codes for even more movies.

There are plenty of possibilities to amuse kids of different ages from seven up (UK PEGI rating). In the USA, where there’s a different approval system for video games, it’s only approved for age 10+ due to “cartoon violence”, but we think over 10’s may find some of the characters and movies a little childish.

The bottom line is that fans of any of these Disney movies will love this game. It offers a lot more possibilities than many video games with a high level of interaction. It’s also very well priced when set against comparable video games. Highly recommended for kids in the 7-10 age range.
