Play-Doh DohVinci Style & Store Vanity Complete Design Kit Review (Hasbro)
DohVinci is a follow-the-plan series of design kits from Play-Doh, allowing kids to complete a finished product with the aid of dough-type materials. The Style and Store Vanity is one of the most popular kits, and at first glance it looks great.
But how does it measure up when the project is completed? What do you get, and is there much room for creativity? Let’s see what buyers think.

DohVinci Vanity Box Review
DohVinci from Play-Doh lets you design in 3D with the special provided Deco Pop modelling compound. There are several kits available, but today we’re looking at the DohVinci Style and Store Vanity design kit, which is currently topping the best seller lists in its category.
The Deco Pop comes in tubes, in four different bright colours to appeal to kids. Tools are also provided in this DohVinci vanity box designer kit. There’s a styler for applying the Deco Pop decorative moulding, which you can either apply smooth, or fit the special wave design tip to the styler for a wavy pattern. A scuplting tool lets you add the finishing touches.
The vanity itself is mostly made from cardboard, and as you can see from the photo on the right, it’s a toy, not a full-size piece of furniture. But the drawer really pulls out, and kids can store things inside.
This DohVinci kit made the number 2 slot on Hamleys’ top 10 Christmas toys 2014 list. So how does it work? Briefly, you decorate first, and assemble the parts for the vanity table and mirror later, when it’s all dry. The Deco Pop compound comes in 4 bright colours. It’s a lot like icing a cake. Keep in mind the modelling compound will take a while to dry – at least overnight, and maybe longer, depending where you leave it. Then it’s all done, and you’re ready to show it off!
There’s an ideas guide and a gun with different styling tips to make it all easy. In fact, some parents think it’s too easy. Kids can follow the plan but there’s not much else to do, and two completed DohVinci vanities will probably look very similar, except for some colour differences.
What parents tend to forget is that kids of this age tend to like having exactly the same things as their friends, so this could be seen as an advantage by the girls who are most likely to be attracted to this kind of kit. Also, it allows children who may not have so much individual talent at art, to produce something useful and pretty, and be proud of what they’ve done.
In that respect, it’s a little like a colouring book, but in 3D. So if you like the idea, but are not sure that the vanity set is right for your child – or if she already has the DohVinci vanity box and loves it so much she wants more – you might want to consider other DohVinci design kits.
In summary, parents may not think there’s much to do here, but wannabe creative little girls in the age range seem to love it. Younger children in the range will need help, and we think DohVinci vanity toy is probably best for 8-10 year olds.
