InnoTab2 vs LeapPad2InnoTab 2 Vs LeapPad 2: Two Hot Tablets For Kids, But Which Is The Best?

Two of the hottest toys at the moment are tablets for kids: the VTech InnoTab 2 and the LeapFrog LeapPad 2.

They’re both updated versions of products that were a huge hit last year and children in the 4-9 age bracket love them! But these are two very similar products and you probably don’t want to buy both.

So which is better, InnoTab or LeapPad, and which one should you get for your child? In this article we will compare InnoTab and LeapPad to help you decide.

InnoTab 2 Vs LeapPad 2: A Video Review

Thanks to the Best Toys Guide for that video review of the Leap Pad Vs InnoTab (and for our photo of the two side by side which is a still from the video). If you watched it through to the end, you’ll know they prefer the LeapPad by a small margin. Why? Let’s compare InnoTab and LeapPad to discover the similarities and differences between them.

InnoTab Vs LeapPad: What’s The Difference?

InnoTab2 vs LeapPad2 VerticalAppearance

Both of these tablets for kids give you a choice of ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ colours. The LeapPad 2 from LeapFrog comes in frog green or pink. The InnoTab comes in pink or blue/white (it looks like purple in the video but it is blue).

The screen size is about the same but the Innotab has a bigger surround so it ends up chunkier-looking (although the LeapPad actually weighs a little more). The LeapPad is more metallic looking. To me, that makes the LeapPad look more ‘grown up’ while the InnoTab is more obviously a toy.

I think younger children in the age range (say 4-6 year olds) might prefer the bigger, more colourful InnoTab while older kids (7-9) will probably appreciate having something that looks more like an adult’s electronic product.

Cameras

Both the LeapPad 2 and the InnoTab 2 can take photos and videos. Kids can also view the photos and videos that they have taken and stored.

The LeapPad 2 has two cameras, one on the front and one on the back. When I first heard about this I couldn’t work out why. But there is a reason. You have to imagine the child taking the photo and using the screen as a viewfinder. To take a picture of herself, she needs the camera to be on the front so she can see herself on the screen. To take anything else, she needs the camera to be on the back.

The InnoTab 2 only has one camera but it can rotate from front to back. This gives it the same potential, but it may be a little more likely to get damaged.

Other Features

Both products have ebook readers. The InnoTab wins out on features, however, because it has an MP3 player, while the LeapPad 2 does not.

InnoTab vs LeapPad: Price

On the manufacturers’ recommended pricing, the LeapPad 2 is going to cost you almost $100 while the InnoTab 2 comes in around $20 cheaper at around $80. But of course prices can vary and you may be lucky and get a deal on one or the other.

Ebooks, Games and Applications

Both of these tablets are excellent educational toys. They are not just game consoles. Yes you get games with them but kids will learn something while they play. There are also quizzes and creative apps that encourage the development of art and design skills.

The LeapPad 2 comes with 4 installed apps, plus you get to choose one more for free. The InnoTab comes with 6 installed, plus you get to choose two more for free.

After that, they both have huge libaries of downloadable apps that you (or your kids) can pick from, at extra cost. You can also get apps on cartridges.

The price difference between the products shows up again in the prices of the apps. In fact, the difference is even more marked here: LeapPad apps are about twice the price of InnoTab apps.

Downloadable apps for the VTech InnoTab 2 start at $3 with cartridges around $15, while LeapPad apps start at $7 for downloadable and around $25 for the cartridges.

Accessories

The Vtech InnoTab 2 and the Leap Frog LeapPad 2 pretty much have the same accessories. We’ll take a look at some of these now, but keep in mind none of these things come with the product, you have to purchase them separately.

You can get carry cases for both the InnoTab or LeapPad, in the appropriate colours. You can also get plastic films to protect the screens from scratches, and rubber skins to make them less likely to slip out of the child’s hands.

Both systems use AA batteries and they use them up fast, but you can get rechargeable batteries if you want. Branded battery packs are available. According to customers, the InnoTab requires the VTech rechargeable battery pack while the LeapPad will take any rechargeable AA batteries.

You can avoid using batteries by getting the AC adaptor which connects the tablet to the wall power socket (but these are not chargers: these tablets cannot be charged up from the mains like a phone or a laptop). You can also get adaptors to run the tablets from the power socket in the car.

InnoTab Vs LeapPad: Which One Should You Buy?

The bottom line is: these are both excellent products. Whether you decide to buy the InnoTab or LeapPad for your child depends on your priorities.

A younger child might prefer the look and feel of the InnoTab. It’s cheaper, and its apps are a LOT cheaper, so if you’re on a budget that will be a consideration. It also has an MP3 player.

The LeapPad is more popular and is generally considered to be a higher quality product. It’s likely to appeal more to the older kids in the age range, who might be disappointed to receive an InnoTab instead. It has more memory (although unlike the InnoTab, the memory is not expandable). It has two cameras instead of one.

The Leap Frog LeapPad 2 scores a little higher in user ratings, but the Vtech InnoTab 2 is a very close second.

You might want to take a look at the prices and if you can get a deal on the LeapPad, maybe that will give it the edge…?
