#1 Best Seller in Amazon’s Electronic Learning Products category

LeapFrog’s LeapPad 2 has ‘leaped’ to the top of the hotly competitive market for tablets for kids. Building on the successes of the earlier model, the new LeapPad boasts improved technology and better apps to offer a more rewarding experience in educational play.

So let’s take a closer look to see what makes the LeapPad 2 top of the heap – and since nothing is perfect, we have some criticisms too.

Tablet toys like the LeapPad are the perfect choice for kids who are constantly asking to play with mommy’s or daddy’s iPad and phone. They get to feel all grown up because they have their own tablet, and you get to keep yours! They keep kids entertained and they’re educational too.

What’s Great About The LeapPad 2 From LeapFrog

The LeapPad 2 Explorer is a giant leap forward from LeapFrog’s original LeapPad which came out a few years ago. The original version was a massive hit and this one looks sure to sell even better.

So what’s new in LeapPad 2? There’s more power and more memory, so it’s a lot faster. If you have the original product you’ll notice right away that the turn-on time, loading time for games and in-game actions are all much quicker.

It’s a very versatile product with a huge choice of activities available to download in the form of apps. There’s something to suit every child in the 3-9 age range, and you can buy more apps as your kids develop new interests and abilities.

But the biggest benefit of the LeapPad 2 is the way that it combines play, education and creativity. The apps cover reading, science, art, music, math, geography and more. Choose your apps carefully and kids have a whole world to explore.

What’s Not To Like?

LeapPad 2 green with boyLike other comparable tablets for kids such as its main competitor the InnoTab 2 from VTech, the LeapPad 2 only comes with a small number of free apps. You get five – enough to get kids started so they find their way around the menu etc – but pretty soon they will be wanting more. There are plenty available but there is an extra cost. This is unavoidable with this type of toy but you’ll want to keep it in mind if you’re on a budget.

The other factor is that there’s no built-in rechargeable battery, so it doesn’t recharge when it’s plugged into the wall like a phone. It uses 4 AA batteries and you won’t want to keep buying new ones.

Of course you can get rechargeable AA batteries and a lot of people already have a recharger in the house. If not you’ll probably want to get one. There is a special LeapPad2 Recharger Pack from LeapFrog but we figure you could use any recharger.

LeapPad 2 Review Summary

This is an excellent product with a lot to offer kids age 3-9. It will keep them happy (and learning) for hours. As long as you are okay with having to pay extra for more apps, which is inevitable with this kind of product, then you’ll definitely want to go ahead and get this for your child. It helps kids take the first step into the world of computers – which are going to be an essential part of everyday life for their generation.
