Learning Resources Pretend & Play School Set

Learning Resources School setThis pop-up, folding “instant classroom” is perfect for kids who want to play school. The clock and bell help the pretend teacher to manage lesson times, while the “students” learn to finish their assignments within a certain time.

You get a double-sided map for teaching geography, a calendar, a dry erase board and tons of materials like report cards, stickers etc. A pointer helps teacher stay in charge.

Learning Resources give an age range of 4+ for the Pretend and Play school set, but we think that’s a little low. Their argument is that it helps young ones to get accustomed to the school experience before they attend real school.

However, the person being teacher will certainly need to be already attending school, or they will have very little idea of what to do. The materials are very detailed and a child who can’t read yet will be a little lost. We agree with the majority of reviews that kids really need to be older, say age 6-9, to enjoy this set to its full potential.

The set is sturdy but lightweight and easy to store or carry with its built in handle. It unfolds to a three part display board with storage pouches and pockets. When open, the Pretend and Play schoolhouse measures 16 inches high by 38 inches long. The clock helps your young ones learn to tell time.

Spelling and math worksheets are included in the pack along with “Good Job” reward stickers and virtually everything your young one needs to begin teaching class. The only thing you will need to supply is pens for the dry wipe board. We think Learning Resources should really have included a couple of these because you don’t want kids writing on the board with non-erasable markers.

Whether in the role of make-believe teacher or student, there’s a lot for kids to do here. Many school sets focus on the teacher, with no activities for the students. While one child certainly could use this alone to “teach” their toys, this set is ideal for two or more kids to play together, or for one child to use with a parent, so they develop social skills at the same time as they get a good boost to their listening comprehension and learning skills.

The Learning Resources Pretend & Play School Set does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s one of those wonderful toys that acts as an educational tool but sneaks “under the radar” so that children will simply enjoy it as a fun toy while they pretend and play.
