What’s Great About The Melissa & Doug Giraffe
Probably the best thing about the Melissa and Doug Giraffe is the size of it! It stands almost 5 ft tall and stays upright by itself on four strong legs. The legs, like the neck, are reinforced to give it strength.
For kids who like pets, animal shows on television or going to the zoo, this could be the toy of their dreams! To a young child it would seem almost as tall as a real giraffe. In fact baby giraffes are between 5 ft and 6 ft tall when they are born, so it does come close, although adult giraffes of course are a lot taller.
It looks realistic too, with brown and beige markings like a real giraffe. It is well proportioned and the face is lovely, very cute with big eyes and eyelashes. It even has horns and ears that you can grab onto. The fur is so soft that children – and probably adults too – will be wanting to touch it all the time!
It seems strong and durable, with good stitching. As we’ve said, the legs and neck are reinforced so it doesn’t have any problem standing upright. We think too that a child could drag it around quite a lot without damaging it. They can also lie it down to cuddle up and hug it.
What’s Not So Great
Although it stays upright very well if left alone, it is going to fall over if you hit it from the side, as you’d probably expect.
As you can see in the video, the giraffe is big and strong enough for a very small child to sit astride it as if riding, with adult help. But that child is surely younger than the recommended age range of 3 years and over. We think if a 4 or 5-year-old climbed onto it like that it would collapse, possibly hurting the child as well as damaging the legs of the giraffe. So if you’re getting it for an older child there might have to be rules about not riding on it.
Melissa and Doug Giraffe Review Summary
This giraffe would be great for any child’s bedroom or playroom – as long as the room is big enough! It’s not cheap of course but we think it’s a reasonable price for the size and quality. Children love it and it can be a long-lasting animal companion for them, as well as being very strokable and huggable.
